How Silt Fence Installation Is Conducted

By Joshua Smith

When in need of a temporary sediment control device in your construction site, install silt fences. These devices are used mainly to protect the quality of water in nearby seas, lakes, river and streams from sedimentation of storm water runoff. They are widely installed these days on construction sites because of their simple design and low cost. The silt fence installation process is carried out in the following ways.

Silt fences are used in combination with sediment traps and sediment basins. In this context, their main role is to control erosion and retain sediment in areas where soil is affected by construction activities. These devices are usually installed around construction sites to act as perimeter control.

Common siltation fences have filters that prevent soil particles from being eroded from a landscape. For filters to function properly, they are precisely manufactured using synthetic fabric as the main raw material. Attaching them to metallic or wood stakes increases their efficiency. In this case, their lower parts are usually installed several inches into the ground for stability reasons.

After a storm event, the synthetic fabric is usually altered to dislodge fine soil particles and enable water to flow. With respect to erosion and the protected watershed, large soil particles remain within the construction site. It reaches a point where the particles completely fill the fencing equipment hence the need for installing another boundary marker on top of the current one.

In some nations, people are sensitized on the advantages of using reinforced boundary markers. The markers are also supposed to have strong filters designed with synthetic fabric and embedded with long wire meshes. When filters are combined with wire meshes, they become stronger and more resistant to the pressure of moving water and sediments.

Studies on silt fences have proven that they are more efficient and effective in preventing soil erosion. Other researches have shown that good maintenance procedures increase the overall durability of metal enclosures used for fencing purposes. This is the reason why after installing these enclosures on your property, it is wise to conduct routine maintenance checks. This ensures that fabric filters are not affected by clogging.

There are multiple techniques of installing these fencing items. However, the most effective one is known as the static slicing technique. This method ensures that soil is held well on both sides of an enclosure. It also allows proper soil compaction that is crucial to the performance of any boundary marker. The effectiveness of fencing items is measured in terms of their ability to hold thousands of pounds of sediment.

The cost of installing siltation fences is based on factors such as length and width. For example, if you want to enclosure a large site with an ongoing construction, choose a longer fencing item. The length of the device should be proportional to the total perimeter of the site that is supposed to be fenced.
