How To Use A Rock Climbing Wall

By Kelly Wood

There are many benefits to using a rock climbing wall. It is a good form of exercise. For people looking to get over a fear of heights it is a place to do so that is relatively safe and under professional supervision. In order to use one effectively it helps to follow a few basic tips.

There are other benefits to doing this in an indoor environment or other controlled space. If you are looking to try out climbing on vacation then this is a safe way to practice and develop your abilities. Therefore you can be free to develop and learn without worrying about falling and potentially injuring yourself.

A better approach is to prepare yourself before a climb, both in terms of mental preparation and physical development. Spend a bit of time in the gym developing your arms, legs and core. An instructor or experienced employee ought to be able to show you the most effective exercises that will allow you to develop your muscles before you begin a climb.

One example of a beneficial exercise before you start to climb is using a squeeze ball. This allows you to strengthen your fingers and wrist as you repeatedly squeeze. Over time this then makes it easier to create a muscle memory so you become used to this action and do not think too hard about it when you start climbing.

The core and legs should not be overlooked either. Core strengthening exercises such as leg squats will make it easier to harmonize the motions of your arms and legs as you climb. However do not overdo the strengthening exercises as flexibility is vital as well and you do not want to carry extra weight.

Remember before you start to warm up. Get your hands and feet warmed up as well as your arms and legs. You should then find that you are able to do your first climb without getting cramps, something that may put people off when they do it for the first time and forget to properly warm up. As with any exercise make sure you have a bottle of water with you and wear loose clothing for ease of movement.

It is also important to begin gradually. Some people may attempt the harder routes in order to prove a point. However it is more sensible to start gradually and build up because trying harder routes before you are ready will increase the risk of injury and may put you off climbing at a later point.

In simple terms using a rock climbing wall is about developing your muscles, gradually developing your skills and generally being sensible. Look for gyms and sports centers that offer professional supervision as they will be able to keep you safe as well as give you encouragement and pointers where necessary. Look online to see what is available in your local area as well as feedback on the best gyms near you.
