The Lure Of Bonefishing Key West Florida

By Michelle Howe

Many fishermen decide to go bonefishing Key West giving the idyllic surroundings for this vacation. The warm, shallow waters off of the Keys provide the perfect habitat for these fish. Mainly a silvery grey color, but with a darker back they can sometimes be hard for the untrained eye to spot. Even the locals often refer to them as the grey ghost.

They do like the warmer waters, and if it gets too cold will move off of the flats and into warmer waters. This is why it makes sense to get in touch with a local guide. They know the waters and the conditions, and they certainly know their fish.

A lot of fishermen have heard tales of flats fishing, but have yet to try it themselves. Imagine it, just the local guide and two of you on a very small skiff. Once you have reached the flats the engine is shut off and secured. The guide climbs onto the platform and starts to slowly pole over the flats.

Due to his vantage point he can see any fish before you can. He will notify you of the fish's direction by using the clock face method. He will also tell you just how far away it is in boat lengths. Now it is down to you to cast your bait just in front of the fish, and the guide will direct you if the fish is shying away from the bait.

When a fish strikes you will know all about it. This is a fish designed for speed. They are also a cautious and clever fish, it can develop into a battle of wills between you and the fish. One reason why so many people get attracted to this sport.

There are some prize specimens out there just waiting to be hooked. It is entirely up to you as to whether you try fishing with light tackle or if you try your hand at fly fishing. A word of advice, set up your rod the night before. This is because space is tight on a skiff, and if you have to rig on the day, this will eat into your fishing time.

Fly fishing on the flats is like nothing you have ever tried before. The results can make it all worthwhile though. Most guides have their own equipment and it is ideal to ask him about tips and pointers over any recommended equipment, you would be wise to listen to what he has to say.

Find out just why there are so many fishing contests held on the flats. Fishing with live bait on a light tackle is both exciting and fun. Tempt fish with live shrimp, bait that they love to take. Listen as your guide calls direction and distance, drop your bait just in front of the cruising fish and prepare to enjoy the fight.

So for any sport fishermen, only one type of vacation will do. They want bonefishing Key West area. The fish are bigger and better than in the Bahamas, and certainly more elusive to catch. Yet people return year after year, which speaks volumes.
