Best Resorts In Rome:ITALY - Discovering Pescara - The Resort City of Abruzzo

By John Roney

Like Portes du Soleil in France and Switzerland, Via Lattes is spread over two countries, with four of its ski resorts in Italy (Sauze dOulx, Sestriere, Sansicario and Claviere) and one other in France (Montgenvre)

Just the Aeroporto Internazionale d'Abruzzo moved 3,300 tons cargo and 371,247 passengers during 2007, figures that help you understand why the sandy beaches of Pescara are among the favorite summer destinations in Italy, although the city's beneficial climate makes it appropriate destination to visit all year round. Despite its historic background, there are not ancient ruins to visit in this city because it was devastated by Nazis during the World War II, although many buildings and monuments were successfully restored after Pescara's reconstruction in the 1960s and guided city tours can take you to discover them.

Sitting at 2035 metres and with more than 400 km runs and 66 lifts available, Sestriere is a very popular resort. Skiiers can also enjoy over 8km of cross-country ski tracks. There are also facilities for ice-skating in the very centre of the resort. Sansicario is hidden between the larger resorts Sestriere and Sauze d' Oulx and was also used in Olympic Games for the womens downhill and bobsleigh. The bobsleigh is now open to everyone so now is your once in a lifetime chance to speed down a Olympic bob run. With 3 beginner runs and 15 Intermediate Runs, Sansicario is perfect for younger skiers.

The information includes details of hotels and other accommodation; restaurants; addresses for sporting activities, and many other services. So complete is it that it even includes the location of the public toilet in its list of 'useful addresses'. But don't worry if you're desperate and haven't got time to leaf through the booklet. Behind them, the town rises quickly in imposing blocks to a historic centre dominated by the Basilica of San Giacomo - a Romanesque church prized highly enough to have been declared a national monument. The lakefront and historic centre are connected by a series of steep, narrow, cobbled alleyways.

Bellagio is rightly considered one of the Best Resorts In Rome on a Lake noted for its romantic atmosphere. Liszt, while staying at the Villa Melzi, wrote: 'Whenever you may write the story of two happy lovers, place them on the shores of Lake Como'. Not surprisingly, it's a venue favoured by wedding planners, offering the possibility of holding the wedding, reception and honeymoon in the same general location. There's even a special events team to help you get it right. For those not contemplating such a drastic course of action, alternative popular nearby attractions include Menaggio and Varenna (linked by a dedicated ferry service, including car ferries); Villa Carlotta and Villa del Balbianello down the western branch; Colico, Bellano and the Abbey of Piona on the eastern lakeside, and Como, at the southern end of the Lake.
