Walking Safari's In Zambia

By Cecilia Owens

African has two types of safaris - the classic safari and walking safari. In the well-known classic safari, a four-wheel drive vehicle takes you through the bush for exciting rides. In the walking safari, originating in Zambia, visitors have a closer look at wild animals in the bush.

While Kenya, South Africa, and Tanzania are overrun with tourists going on safaris, Zambia has remained an unspoiled secret. Zambia is a landlocked country located in Southern Africa. With a plethora of national parks, as well as the impressive Victoria Falls, Zambia is an excellent location for your African vacation. There are many options for accommodations, from budget camping to luxurious lodges.

Zambia is known for its walking safari which was first led by Norman Carr Safaris more than 50 years ago. Since then, it became so popular that many companies start offering walking safaris. A walking safari means is conducted walking on foot and not by a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Walking safaris have an entirely unique experience in comparison of driving safari, as you become part of life in the bush.

If you want to get really close to the wildlife, consider going on a walking safari. Experienced guides who understand the behavior and habits of the native Zambian animals will lead you - and an armed escort will be provided for added security.

Zambia has a number of national parks that act as game reserves. These national parks are teeming with wildlife, and visitors can expect to see elephants, lions, hippos, crocodiles, and many other species of animals. South Luangwa National Park is one of the most popular game reserves in Zambia, and many agree that this park offers some of the best safaris in all of Africa.

Lodging and safaris should be booked well in advance. It should be noted that some accommodations and safaris might not be available during the rainy season (December-April) due to poor conditions. Children under the age of twelve are not permitted on walking safaris. Upon booking your Zambian walking safari inquire about any vaccinations needed before visiting.
