Which Islands offer the Best Escape?

By Erin O. Daly

The romantic idea of islands has been ingrained in all of us from tales such as Robinson Crusoe and Treasure Island. We idealise their isolation from the rest of the continents of the world and see them as the antithesis of the stressful, globalised and busy environment we work and live in every day. No wonder they are such popular destinations for holiday makers, then. Here is a list of the best island getaways our blue planet has to offer.

The Hawaiian island Maui is one where you can experience some incredible aspects of nature. You can stand on the top of a 10, 000 foot volcano to watch the sun rise, or you can swim underneath a waterfall. You can walk through huge craters, or chill out on beaches of black, red and white sand. Travellers who like to explore the wonders of nature will no doubt view Maui as paradise.

Santorini in Greece is a popular option for those looking to leave their worlds behind. It is formed around a massive lagoon that was formed in a volcanic eruption. The capital, Fira, is situated on the cliffs above it, and is home to a bustling nightlife. The island's history can also be seen in the ruins o the ancient town of Akrotiri, which has been preserved by volcanic ash.

Jamaica is a Caribbean island that is both beautiful and fascinating. Not only is it home to glorious weather and gorgeous beaches and coves, it also displays a unique blend of African, Asian, European and Middle Eastern culture. There really is no other place on earth like it.

Another perfect island escape in the Caribbean is St. Lucia. The edges are made up of glorious gold beaches, while inland there are hot springs and quaint villages. It offers the opportunity to walk through the fascinating other worldly planes of steaming springs on Mt Soufrire. These things mean that it is both a suitable place for the family to come and relax, or the perfect romantic getaway for honeymooning couples.
