Luxor holidays: places to go and things to do

By Claire Collins

When you think of Egypt holidays, what generally comes to mind is a lot of sand, grand pyramids and camel rides. Luxor holidays offers much more, showcasing some of the world's most incredible ancient sites and some of the oldest standing monuments anywhere.

Luxor is almost 500 miles south of Cairo, and rests on the bank of the infamous river Nile. A perfect blend of historic ruins and modern culture, there is so much here to please visitors. If you're keen on history then you can spend days here simply sightseeing! Yet there is plenty more here to do as well.

Whether you're into ancient history or simply appreciate breathtaking design, foreign cultures and fascinating sights, you'll love your Luxor holidays. You can spend the days exploring the ancient temples of Luxor, and Karnax, and wandering through the remnants of the city of Thebes. A great tip is to visit these places at the end of the day. Not only will there be fewer people around, but the evening light makes the temples glow.

Just across the river Nile lies the Valley of the Kings, where you'll find an incredible city of tombs of Pharoahs and important nobles from ancient times. It's one of the most fascinating sights you'll ever see.

Luxor is renowned for its alabaster work and visitors can find an interesting array of figurines and sculptures dotted around the place, at one of the cities "souqs", Egyptian markets. Prices are relatively cheap although it is compulsory to haggle over prices. Luxor is also easily accessible to holidaymakers on Sharm El Sheik holidays, making it the ideal destination for a cultural day trip away from the paradisiacal beaches of the Red Sea.
