In the year 2009, Disneynature Productions released an award winning film called "Earth" on Earth Day. This movie was followed up with the 2010 release of the much anticipated movie Disneys Oceans. It was also released appropriately on Earth Day, which is a day to commemorate all things that have to do with helping and appreciating the environment. The film is a breathtaking view of life under water.
Two men named Jacques directed this movie. Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud shared the same vision and collaborated to create the feature. It was produced by Romain LeGrand who started his career at Disney in 1995 as a financial analyst. Environmentalist and actor known for his roles in the James Bond movies and hit musical "Mama Mia" Pierce Brosnan starred as the narrator. A instant hit song "Make A Wave" was recorded by Disney Channel stars Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato for the soundtrack. The song was written to spark interest in saving the environment, particularly the sea, amongst young fans.
For some it may be surprising to learn that over three fourths of the earths surface is made up of water. Ninety percent of that water is ocean. The film crew dives deep into places that have never before been explored let alone recorded. The production of this film took an excruciating amount of time. Two full years went into just the preproduction and planning. Then there were four years of filming. Over seventy five trips were made to destinations that have mostly never before been seen let alone filmed. In the four years of filming, the team amassed over 480 hours of footage. That would take twenty days straight to watch! It took another year after filming was complete to edit the footage down to the length of a regular feature film.
The directors said their inspiration for the film is to answer the question "What is an ocean?". Their vision was to capture the magic of the undersea life and show exactly all the different aspects of the sea. They wanted to provide a non-censured vision for all to see. They were able to show the sea's beauty, fierceness, and mysteries all in one movie.
An important aspect of the film is the damage mankind has done and continues to do each day by continuing harmful practices. An obvious practice that is detrimental to not just the water but earth and air is pollution. The population has become so dense that there is also the problem of over developed land. Another harmful practice is the greediness of over fishing in areas. Poaching is also a serious offense against humankind. It's no secret that water is one essential resource that sustains all life, and without it, the world would not exist.
