A Local's List Of Travel Options To Go When You Feel The Urge To Get Out Of NYC

By James Dennis

If you live in New York, then you know how terrible summers here can be. The streets are crowded, and the heat is sweltering. Come the weekend during the summer, the last thing you want to do is stick around in Manhattan. Here some great weekend getaway options.

If you have access to a car, then you may want to consider heading upstate to a bed and breakfast. The Catskills are a beautiful place to visit. If you don't want to go that far, try Crabtree's Kittlehouse for a romantic getaway with a significant other.

If you've never been to Fire Island, put it on your summer checklist. Every town in Fire Island has its own unique character, but they all have something in common: no cars. If it weren't for the cell phones that people are on, you would think you are in the 1950s in Fire Island.

Of course, a very popular option for New Yorkers on the weekend is to head out east to the Hamptons. I personally don't love the nightlife out in the Hamptons, but it is a great place to be during the day.

Some of the best areas to go out east include East Hampton, Amagansett and Sag Harbor. All are about a one hour to one and a half hour drive from Manhattan without traffic.

If you have grown weary of the Hamptons, a great alternative is to head to the North Fork. It is much less of a scene than the Hamptons and is much more relaxing. There's plenty to do there, as the area has a ton of vineyards. Go wine tasting for a day.

Cape Cod makes for a great holiday weekend getaway. It's about a 3 hour long drive, but well worth it. The Lobster Rolls alone are worth the trip to me!

Hopefully this article helped turn a light bulb on in your head for ideas for some fun ideas for the summer.
