Keeping Your Family Safe When You Go Camping

By Tiffany Ellis

Going camping is something that families have been doing since the pioneer days. They did it out of necessity because there were no motels or hotels along the way to where they were going. They were not doing it for the fun of it, but in search of a new home. Although it was bound to have been an adventure that they never forgot once they got settled in a new place. Today families go camping strictly for the fun and they want adventure too.

Where a family chooses to set up their tents depends on what their personal preferences are. Some enjoy using a campground that have things in place that they will need like running water and bathrooms with plumbing. A lot of campgrounds have picnic tables for each set of campers and even swimming pools or a selected area of a lake where swimming is safe. Then there are families that enjoy a more rustic area where they really have to rough it a little more and there might not be other people around them at all.

For those that like a more rustic camping spot, it is necessary to bring along certain gear that will make their camping not only more enjoyable, but safer as well. A first aid kit is an absolute necessity because when you are in a wilderness area alone, the odds of an accident happening are pretty good. You want to be prepared just in case something does happen to someone in the party.

Make sure you have a lantern with plenty of fuel that will last your entire stay. You don't want to use just a flashlight or camp fire to find you way around in a dark campsite because it can be dangerous. Remote areas can have snakes or even other wild things that could hurt you if you don't see them. Chairs to sit in are a must because you don't necessarily want to sit on the ground where bugs will bite you easily.

Having a camping stove on the trip is a great back up plan in case you are not able to get a fire started for some reason. Some people enjoy using a rotisserie or a grill to cook fish and other foods, but a camping stove is sometimes easier and more convenient in a pinch. You should cook any meat or fish well to avoid getting any kinds of stomach ailments that could ruin the trip. Always supervise children carefully even if you are at a campground. Accidents can happen suddenly and the only way you will have a fun camping trip is to have a safe one.
