Harris Vacations And Some Useful Information

By Andrew Kelly

Are you and your family mulling over taking a holiday in the British Isles? Though overwhelmingly folk having a U.K. vacation choose to stay in famous places such as London, other tourists prefer to visit places such as Scotland. In the article below I describe the Isle of Harris and the factors which make it such a fantastic destination for vacations.

Though London might feature some of the most stunning galleries and museums in the whole of the United Kingdom together with some of the most famous attractions the city can not appeal to all types of tourist.

Some folk have a preference for vacations which are more relaxed and far less hectic while other people much prefer vacations which involve a little more action such as sporting vacations. Strangely the island of Harris, in Scotland's Outer Hebrides (or Western Isles), is perfect for both types of tourist.

Like a great many other people staying on the beach for the majority of my vacation has never really been the type of thing I would do. Please do not get the wrong idea, I often spend time relaxing on a beach, and Harris certainly has some of the most breathtaking beaches in the country of Scotland, but, I also like to travel a little inland too. I really like to spend time just soaking in the atmosphere of the place, I like to sample the local food and culture. In truth I just like to experience something new each year and I try very hard attempting to find something 100% unique. This is more than likely why I enjoy visits to the island in the Hebrides named the Isle of Harris and why I frequently decide to hire self catering houses on the Isle of Harris.

One of the primary reasons people visit the Isle of Harris is to enjoy the islands culture and landscape. The Isle of Harris culture has, over hundreds of years been massively influenced by the Norse, Celtic, Scottish and English races. These days the majority of people speak in the Gaelic language and though some speak English, it is more often than not their second language. The Harris inhabitants are amongst the friendliest on the planet and the hospitality is world renowned. The Isle of Harris folk are extremely proud of the breathtaking beauty of the island and go to great lengths to keep the island very tidy so it is vitally important not to leave litter.

It is incredibly important to keep in mind that rubbish doesn't only make the place appear unsightly it is also immensely dangerous to wildlife.

A further thing to remember is that the Isle of Harris roads are rather different to those you will have experienced on the Scottish mainland stretches of single track road are common and you will often be forced to used passing places to let past traffic from ahead and also from behind. Just keep it in mind that you come to a stop on the left of the road. However, if the vehicle wishing to get past you is large and cumbersome and the passing place is to the right of the road you can carefully pull over into to it to let the vehicle pass more easily but at all time take care not to drive off the road too much.

I hope that my article above sufficiently interests you in having a short break on Harris. Many visitors the Hebrides choose to stay in two places. There are a small number of other islands to visit including North Uist, Lewis and South Uist. Why don't you consider staying in a Harris self catering house for a week and then book a room in a hotel on North Uist or a South Uist hotel for the remainder of your holiday?
