Birmingham's Ikon Gallery

By Andrew Kelly

Birmingham is a cosmopolitan city in the West Midlands, England, it is an immensely popular destination for city breaks. The city has an immense variety of world class tourist attractions including many listed churches and other important structures as well as many museums and galleries, including Birmingham's Ikon Gallery.

The Ikon Gallery is an art gallery which specialises in contemporary art which is housed in the building which was previously the Oozells Street Board School, Brindleyplace, however it was not always in such surroundings.

The gallery was founded in 1964 by Angus Skene and four art students. The four artists were; Jesse Bruton, David Prentice, Sylvani Merilion and Robert Groves. Angus Skene had purchased an artwork by Prentice and the two of them discussed the endless problems suffered by local artists, including the extreme lack of venues and support. The discussion resulted in the basic concepts for Ikon which was to be a "gallery without walls".

Angus Skene provided the initial funds for the project, which consisted of exhibitions in such varied locations as post offices and cinemas in a motorcycle sidecar, the concept being to make the public more aware of art. In order to to keep the expense minimal staffing duties was by the founding artists, friends and family who did it free of charge. After a while the Ikon Gallery established itself in a glass stall in the Bull Ring shopping centre.

During the next couple of decades the Ikon Gallery moved from place to place until 1997 when it purchased, with help from the National Lottery Fund, its present premises, the former Oozells Street Board School. In the last few years the Ikon Gallery has held a number of exhibitions and its continuous ability to excel has led to it becoming immensely popular, to such an extent that in 2006 it opened another gallery, Ikon Eastside in Digbeth.

If you are thinking about taking a Birmingham vacation remember to allow time for you to visit at least one of the Ikon Galleries. Also it is important to know that although there are many Birmingham hotels and guest houses finding bed and breakfast in Birmingham can sometimes be pretty difficult. It is therefore crucially important to book your accommodation at the earliest opportunity. You should be aware that Birmingham International Airport is roughly 8 miles away from the center of the city just off the A45 and near the M42 (junction 6). You will be pleased to know that there is a lot of hotels and bed and breakfasts close by the airport.
