Discover The Classic Movie The Shawshank Redemption

By Sonia Barry

The Shawshank Redemption takes place in 1947. Successful banker Andy Dufresne, is in his car. He sits quietly in the wee hours of the morning. With him, are his gun and a bottle of alcohol. He is not sure what he wants to do. Does he go in and shoot his wife and her lover? Does he kill himself? He contemplates it for a long time.

He decides that they are not worth it and leaves. He throws his gun away. As it splashes in the water, he drives off. That was a mistake. After he left, a man entered his house and killed his wife and her boyfriend.

When he went to trial, it did not take long to convict him. He had no way of proving where he was that evening. The only saving evidence was at the bottom of a lake. He was given two life sentences.

The movie moves to Shawshank prison. The inmates are excited. New residents about to arrive. They like to bet on which new fish will crack. One person will always start screaming, on the first night. Ellis Redding, known as Red, thinks that Andy will be the first one to break.

Andy never says a word and Red loses the bet. It is the first time you see Andy and Red together, but not the last. They eventually become friends. Andy meets Warden Norton and begins his new life in prison.

The early years are very tough for Andy. Some men called the sisters are constantly wanting sex from him. Sometimes he fights them off. Sometimes he does not succeed. Then prison life changes for him. The warden gives him the opportunity to work in the prison library.

He eventually gives free financial advice to the prison guards. He even does their taxes. Prison life begins to get easier for Andy. The guards encourage the sisters to leave Andy alone for good. However, it took a severe beating, to convince them.

Andy's financial wizardry catches the attention of the warden. He becomes an assistant and does the books. He discovers that the warden is getting rich with bribes and kickbacks. He helps him hide and launder the money to a fake identity.

As the years pass, Andy has the run of the prison. He can do what he wants, when he wants. One day a new inmate arrives. The man has knowledge and evidence of Andy's innocence. However, he is too valuable to the warden. The tone of the movie changes. What happens next is full of suspense and surprises.

Andy decides that he only has two options left. He can get busy living. He can get busy dying. He chooses life.

The bonds of friendship can form and endure in all kinds of ordeals. You can survive in situations that you once thought impossible. This movie demonstrates those important issues in life.

Not everyone appreciates this movie in 1994. Many consider it be a classic, today. Watch it and decide for yourself. Maybe it has been a few years since you have seen it. That is a good reason to watch The Shawshank Redemption again.
