A Guideline For A Successful Hike

By Andrew Metts

Hiking is one of the most relaxing and enjoyable activities. It's also a great way to spend time with the family and the kids. However, if you don't follow certain rules while hiking, it can get a bit dangerous. This guide will provide you with some tips to help keep your hike safe and enjoyable.

We all walk everyday so many think hiking is just as easy! Every trail is different and there are some extremely challenging trails out there, so don't be fooled! If you're not fit, then start slow. It's not easy to pick up and hike 3 days if you're out of shape. If you're going on a hike, always let someone know where you're going.

Carrying a map, guide and/or compass can end up being a life saver. Always make sure you have one of these, ideally all 3 if possible. Many trails will have markers throughout the trail which should help you navigate the way. If you decide to go off trail at any point take note of any landmarks as well as markings, in order to get back on track. Maps/Guides will also help you if you do find yourself off track.

One of the biggest mistakes hikers make is they don't bring enough water. It's very easy to become dehydrated if you don't have enough water. Always pack more water than you think you may need. If you're hiking for more than one day, then bring a purifier to help keep the weight off your shoulders (water can get heavy).

We've all witnessed weather reports that aren't accurate. Always overdress for the hike as you can easily remove layers. If the weather changes and you're not prepared, it won't be fun. Rain gear and boots are a must. Boots will prevent you from turning an ankle, but make sure they're comfortable and won't cause any blisters.

Nobody wants to give up on a hike, but sometimes it's the better choice! If you're not feeling well or you're injured, it's best to return to the base. If you think you just need a rest, then you should absolutely take it. Find a comfortable and safe spot and enjoy the break until you feel energized.

Before leaving, make sure you know how to start a proper fire. Even if you're only going for a one day hike, you never know how long you'll end up out there. A fire can help keep you warm, keep animals away as well as provide a way for a search team to find you if you happen to go missing.

There are many other things I can get into, but these are some of the essentials. A few other things to bring along include a first-aid kit and bug spray. Hopefully you'll use these tips as a starting point and hike in a safe manner!
