Travel Ideas For Christmas Breaks

By Dominic Jones

Time was when Christmas used to be only celebrated at home with your close family. But more and more people are now opting to spend the long Christmas break away from home. They may travel with their extended family and friends to interesting destinations either in their home country or to exotic destinations abroad. By staying in a hotel they don't have to cook and clean all through the holidays.

Those seeking a white Christmas quite often decide to spend their holidays at a glitzy ski resort while others seek the sun and the tranquility of a beach.

When it comes to skiing, USA and Canada have some top resorts. In the USA, states like Wyoming, Colorado, Vermont, California, New Mexico and Utah have some topnotch resorts with fine powder and varied terrains. British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec and Ontario in Canada too have some incredible resorts for skiers, be they beginners or experts.

In Europe, France and Switzerland have attracted the bulk of skiers for over a century. Italy, Austria and Lapland too are popular skiing destinations with some great slopes. The last few years have also attracted tourists to the relatively undiscovered countries in Eastern Europe. Bulgaria, Slovakia, Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Russia not only offer fantastic skiing and cheap vacations, but they also offer a taste of their history and culture as many have UNESCO-listed world heritage sites within close proximity of the ski resorts. Further away in Asia, Japan's Tohoku and Chubu regions have some fine ski resorts.

Sun worshippers wishing to get away from the cold can take their pick from pristine sandy beaches. From the Caribbean and Europe, to Asia and Australia, you can choose from a great many beaches where the weather is sunny and there's little to no chance of rain.

You can make your beach holiday as lazy or as adventurous as you want. Do nothing besides stretch on the beach all day and work on your tan or pursue a host of water related activities like snorkeling, scuba diving and water skiing. Whatever you do, you can be sure you will have a great tan to flaunt in January.

Christmas and New Year's are celebrated with great fanfare almost everywhere around the world. So whether you opt for a white Christmas at a ski resort or a sun-drenched one at a beach, the place you choose to go to will undoubtedly have some festivities planned. Restaurants usually have special menus, wine bars and pubs stay open longer and you can also enjoy some live entertainment around town. In short, even if you are far away from home, you can be assured of a good time over the Christmas holidays.
