Boating Safety Information

By Jason Myers

Before you even consider taking your brand new boat out for a trip on the ocean it is in your own best concern to undergo a boat safety course and have a boat safety review to look for the mandatory safety devices. The US Coast Guard can offer you with a list of required and suggested boat safety devices.

Life vests, or personal drifting devices as they are formally called, should be readily available for each occupant of the vessel. They must also be adjusted to the size of the person who is meant to use them in the event of an emergency. They must be in good working condition with all the straps and clips situated properly and usable. It is a great suggestion to have them fitted to the passengers so that if needed they can be worn without much further adjusting. In some states there is a minimum age for which the putting on of a life jacket is needed every time.

As a large factor of boating safety there should also be present on board a recently checked fire extinguisher. It should be distinctly labelled so that anyone can locate it if necessary and reach for it in time. There are varied types of fire extinguishers, engineered to extinguish different kinds of fires. For boating safety it is suggested to obtain a Type B or C fire extinguisher, these are engineered for tackling fires started or fuelled by oil, grease and gas, or electrical fires.

As a last part of boating safety, especially for vessels with gasoline engines and specifically if the engine is mounted in the vessel, proper ventilation is vital.

Not only to avoid any development of carbon monoxide, endangering the crew with toxic conditions, but also to avoid gasoline smoke from building up and becoming a serious fire hazard.
