Yarra Valley Cheese Shop

By Mary Noestt

Victorian farm exports have hit a boom of over $8 billion, it's apparently a record. The dairy exports in Victoria had the highest increase, and accounted for 86 percent of all Australian dairy exports. Why do the rest of the world desire our Victorian dairy products?

Yarra Valley Dairy must be one good reason for the serious demand. The Yarra Valley Dairy produces quality handmade farmhouse cheeses. Their Yarra Valley Dairy Marinated Feta, known in Australia as Yarra Valley Dairy Persian Fetta, has built a name for itself overseas. It is a creamy silky textured cows ' milk cheese, marinated in olive oil, fresh thyme and garlic that gives this tasty feta a warm rich finish. It is available in America, Hong Kong and UAE and naturally throughout Australia.

Mary and Leo Mooney started the little family business in 1995. Today they have 200 high spec cattle. Their cheeses are non-animal rennet, vegetarian and GM free.

As the name indicates, the Dairy is located in the Yarra Valley, only one hour north east of Melbourne, Australia, in one of the best wine, food and dairy places of Melbourne. On the property, right next to the cheese factory, you will find a cheese shop open to the visitors. They offer you free of charge cheese tastings of five different cheeses selected everyday. Marinated cheeses, fresh cheeses, and matured cheeses - I will guarantee you will fall in love with one of the cheeses and will want more. Make a selection from the different cheese platters, sit down, relax and enjoy the beautiful view overlooking the Yarra Valley while the cheese is softening on your tongue. Ensure you don't leave without taking some home with you. The cheese shop is open each day (except Christmas Day) between 10.30am and 5pm. They also provide other local Yarra Valley products.

Therefore come and find out yourself why the remainder of the world looks towards Victoria for their farm produce.

The Valley is made of many producers, ranging from dairy, meat, berries, cherries, stonefruits, flowers, wine, ale and cider. Many of those producers have farm gates, where visitors can buy items.

A great day trip option, there is plenty to do over a number of days as well. Relax in the region and stay a while in one of the many accommodation venues offered, surrounding the Dairy. Look for accommodation in Yarra Glen. If you stay overnight, you are placed perfectly to enjoy an early morning Hot Air Ballon flight, looking over the beautiful Yarra Valley. A tour around the many winery locations, will also be worthwhile. Yarra Glen is just down the road, and offers you experiences that will make your visit memorable one.
